Came here for breakfast today with the kids. I had the Chorizo omelet while the kids had the Southern Belle skillet and the basic scrambled eggs, sausage, and toast. My son ate every bit of the skillet meal and my daughter had most of her breakfast too. The chorizo omelet was good, but I've had better. I didn't realize it would have huge chunks of jalapeños mixed in. The menu does state it contains peppers, but I thought they'd be diced. I ended up picking them out but the omelet was still really good. I will definitely be back. There were too many items on the menu I'd like to try.

We love this very family oriented restaurant. Great food, great staff. We love this place

I agree with Rick A. Nothing special bout this place other than the fact it's walking distance from NCFST and they give you a lot of food for the price you pay. I had the Lunch special: Greek chicken salad wrap. I replaced the fries with potato skins. It came with complimentary soup and bread/crackers. I had the chicken noodle soup. It was pretty good. One of the few lower sodium chicken noodles I've tasted. The wrap was huge. I thought i ordered 2 accidentally when it came out. Couldn't finish the other half. They have a huge selection of breakfast foods. Haven't tried it yet. Maybe next time?

Ahhh.... Southern Belle's, where do I begin? I've only visited SB's for breakfast. The portions are huge and calories are high. The service is usually very good. Like some of the other reviewers I must say that the food isn't anything to write home about, so I'll write about it on Yelp instead. With the 'old country store' decor Southern Belle's seems to want to be the next Cracker Barrel. There are some pretty interesting and random things sitting around: churns, plows, etc. I grew up in the south, and I'm not talking about the south side. I'm talking about Kentucky. I have several stories of supposed southern cooking in the Chicago area (e.g., country ham that is not country ham), although that's for another time and another Yelp review. On one of my first visits to SB's I ordered the Biscuits and Gravy- Not Good. Keep in mind that I have pretty high standards for B&G, which I have listed on my profile as my last meal on earth. Unfortunately, I have yet to find any edible version in Chicagoland. If you have any recommendations, please let me know. I keep coming back to SB's every couple months for breakfast after my regular places have gotten stale, but after going to SB's, my standard breakfast places seem to be reincarnated; they seem newer, better. A breath of new life has been breathed into them after a reminder of mediocre vs. good, vs. great breakfast options. I usually get an omelette with fruit instead of hash browns. The fruit is usually only melon/cantaloupe. The coffee at SB is very average. I'd like to mention the service is usually really good, so I have no complaints in that area. The servers are very friendly in their cute bibbed overalls. Southern Belle's is a place to go for a change of pace and for people watching, not for the food.

Ring My Bell!! This is the best place to roll out of bed on a Sunday around noon and stroll into for a fabulous homecooked meal to start the day off right. The menu consists of breakfast or lunch options...there is nothing brunch-esque about the place & don't even think about ordering a mimosa here. But I highly recommend grabbing your Sunday paper, settling into a booth and preparing for some hearty grub. MMMM, so much I could say about the place...

I was in Illinois earlier this month and my aunt brought me here for breakfast. It has officially become my favorite breakfast place in all the U.S. To start off, I ordered a cup of their Potato Chowder which was served with fresh warm biscuits, crackers, and butter. It hit the spot just right, good lord. They offer a breakfast combo where you get two eggs your way, hashbrown, and your choice of meat, and a side of pancakes. For a small extra fee you can substitute your buttermilk pancakes for specialty pancakes. I ended up ordering my two eggs over-easy, hashbrown, bacon, and CRANBERRY PANCAKES. *angels sing* My goodness, those pancakes were heavenly. They are served with warm maple syrup. These fluffy pancakes just soaked the maple syrup up and every bite was a dream... Also, the portions are pretty large IMO...the rest of my time in Chicago I searched for pancakes that could compare and I failed to find any that succeeded these. As for the service, I felt it was very friendly. Our waitress was an elderly woman who I felt had that tough-love kind of personality, and I loved that lol. That wise waitress sass, you could call it... or maybe its just me LOL. Anywho, next time I'm in town, this will be my first stop. :D

Wanted to try something local while on vacation in Chicago. Not the best ever but we were hungry, they had food, etc. Fiancé got the Reuben which he loved, I got ham and eggs with hashbrowns. Ham and hash were both dry but the eggs and toast were pretty good.

The portion sizes are insane!!! The 3 egg omelet is the size of a football, the sausage patties are bigger than most hamburgers I've had. The service is fast and friendly. The only areas for improvement would be that the hash browns were bland and that the menu was laid out really badly. We'd go back again for sure.

Only giving two stars for the servers - fast, friendly, attentive. Food was not that great. Breakfast here now 3 times - enough to make a fair assessment. Have only had breakfast, we're on the quest for the perfect hash browns. Didn't find them here - mushy in the middle :-(. It's tough to screw up eggs and toast, those were fine. Grits were gloppy and had no flavor, french toast was entirely too eggy, bacon was supposed to be crispy; unfortunately came out dry and tough, more like beef jerky. Another local breakfast place off the list.

My job just moved in the area, so i decided to try this place out. I had higher expectations because of these reviews. The woman who took my order over the phone was clearly irritated because I had questions about the menu. When I came in she was equally rude but tried to pep up after I mentioned yelp. Too late lady. Our food was also mediocre, to make matters worse. I definitely told my coworkers to bypass this place.

I love this place. I come here 2-3 times a week. They have a great selection of breakfast items and a few lunch items. Everything is super cheap and really yummy. The service is super quick even when they are busy and I have always found parking when they are busy. This place is great for big groups and kids too.

I have finally found the perfect spot for breakfast. It's only a few miles from my house, and only took me 7 years of living here to find it! We picked the snowiest morning to look for a new spot and I'm so glad we found it because the food was awesome. The menu was massive and our server couldn't have been more friendly. She approached us in a "hey hon/hey babies" kind of way that makes you feel like you're in her house, complete with affectionate touches on the arm and "I know you from somewhere." The food was extremely prompt, but considering that we were one of two tables filled this morning, I think that might have had something to do with it. And the hash browns. Y'all know my love for potatoes. Who doesn't? Amirite? The hash browns were crispy and perfect. I didn't order them myself, but my wife couldn't finish hers and being a gentleman I step in to help out where I can. IfyouknowwhatImsaying. I ordered the Country Platter, which is eggs, potato pancakes and polish sausage (saaaahsege for Chicagoans). Everything was delicious. My only regret? We're thinking of moving this year. Sigh. Hand to forehead.

The pancakes were great, I ordered scrambled eggs because I get grossed out with the uncooked eggs from the sunny side up style but to my surprise my scrambled eggs weren't cooked well either. The restaurant was not clean I did enjoy the old fashioned place but it would had been better if it was cleaner.

SB's was on my preferred list breakfast and pancakes; often driving 10 miles for their classic omelettes and pancakes. However, today was my last! Arriving at 7:30 AM, we stood in the reception area with no one there to greet us, seat us or given any direction. I noticed only 1 waitress who finally came from the banquet room and motioned us to seat in her section. No menus and no greeting. This was the beginning. I typically ask for egg white substitute instead of whole eggs and I know when I see whole eggs used instead of just whites. Mo was too busy to spend time finding out how our food was and I had to ask the question as she walked away from our table. Rather than make a scene, I ate them (my bad). And, she charged me extra for the egg whites. After depositing the bill on the table, she was found in the back chatting away with 2 women. We needed boxes to go and had to ask another waitress to assist. No more coffee or service. (2 men in the corner had her attention as obvious regulars) No more Southern Belle's for us!

Great breakfast and lunch. Huge omelettes and super friendly wait staff. They make there own sausage and it's great.

Was just there for the first time trying to find an nice breakfast place. Service sucked!! We were handed menus at the door and told to just seat ourselves. Seating ourselves is fine, but this was our first time there and had no idea where to go. Waited about 5 more minutes for a server to come and bring us coffee. Then we were simply asked, "you know what you want?" We ordered and that was all that was said to us. Our food was not the best. Pancakes were basically crispy, with little taste, scrambled eggs tasted like they were soaked in butter and the french toast was tasteless. Place was not that busy either. Find another place like Blueberry Hill or Three Sons on Archer.

I like Southern Belles. The food is soo delicious and it's close to home. I do think the prices are a bit ridiculous, but you do get what you pay for! I LOVE THERE CREAM SOUP. It's absolutely amazing. Usually, I just order breakfast here but I've had lunch as well. All of their food is pretty good and you should definitely come here! Say yes! Ps: the service is slow sometimes but give them a break!!! It's a huge place with many ignorant customers!!! Be nice

Classic diner. Waitresses were extremely nice and the food was very good. Order the ham and my waffles were delish! Waffles were crispy on the outside and tender in the inside...in other words, perfectly prepared.

The food is good here. You usually get seated after walking in and your food with in 15 mins of ordering. But the servers leave much to desire. We come here 3 out of 4 Sundays a month and apparently that does not make us regulars enough to get some attention. We have the same server every Sunday and she spends so much time hug, kissing and chatting up her friends that is takes forever to get her to take our order. Then she leaves the coffee pot on our table or somebody else's bread bowl. I am a good tipper for a good breakfast but this lady doesn't deserve it. When I got to a restaurant I expect 3 things fresh water, good service and hot food. This place just gives you luke warm food. If this wasn't the only place in town with decent priced breakfast I probably won't come here so often. Dear waiters, it doesn't hurt your tip to come over to the table once or twice and ask "how is everything going?" I got the biscuits and gravy. The gravy has the straight from the can taste and the temperature is cold with a side of burnt hash browns. My boyfriend ordered the 2x2x2. The plain scrambled eggs had pieces of ham in them and the tasted like someone poured butter over them. The sausage was decent and the pancakes where good but that's it.

We settled on this place due to some of my patented bad planning and an available Groupon. Thanks for that! First of all, Southern Belle's is quaint and spacious without feeling old. It may cost you a little more than many other family restaurants, but I still left thinking it was a good value...even without the Groupon. The young girl at the front desk could sure use some congeniality courses and quickly. I didn't leave feeling hosted...it was more like, processed. It would also be nice if their tables were somewhat larger so my mother didn't have to move extra settings, etc to a neighboring table to free up needed space - but I appreciate she did that. On the whole, everyone really liked their food and our waitress was great. Everything I touched felt clean and the quaint decor will surely charm non-midwesterners. Even though I'm sure we stayed too long, we were tended to the whole time and everyone will come back for more. The food carries this score like a VERY strong man might.

So cute. I went with a date and had an amazing time. The service we received from our waitress was outstanding. She was quick witted and with it...She could have been my grandmother but age wasn't holding her down. Our food came out so quickly. and was delicious!!!

My boyfriend and I decided to have our Valentines Day breakfast at Belle. I ordered the Southern belles skillet and my bf had the Mexican skillet. The service itself was excellent and we couldn't have had a more attentive waitress, but the food was mediocre. We had the skillets with the cottage fries instead of hash browns and it was so greasy that all you can taste is the oil. You could pick up a potato off the plate and the oil would just drip off. I expected some oil b/c it's a skillet, but this was so bad it was inedible. I definitely won't be returning any time soon.....

Not terrible but not amazing either. The staff is pretty friendly and I like the old fashion atmosphere along with antiques hanging everywhere but the food is just ok. I am the type of person that if I can cook better than you I don't need to pay you to eat here. I got omelets every time I came and I really wanted to like this place but I just don't. I gave it three stars because the prices are fair and its good on the run.

Seated immediately. The menu is straight forward, offering family style helpings of hash and pancakes with omelets. The dining area was spacious with a diner counter for single patrons to grab a quick bite. Friendly wait staff. I really appreciated the attentiveness of the staff. I was actually looking for the restroom and a waitress from behind the counter, not our waitress, saw the look on my face and came from behind the counter to ask me how could she help. I'm not a big breakfast eater but I was more than satisfied with the food and service. Will definitely visit again.

Wonderful breakfast for a great deal! Pancakes were HUGE and thick served with warm syrup. Sausage links were big and not the small ones. The multigrain toast was really delicious too! I highly recommend this place for a great place to start your day. Service was a bit slow though. Loved the decorations! Looking forward to going back for lunch!

My partner and I were there today. 2/8/2014 at approximately 10 am. We both ordered burgers. Our waitress was quite pleasant. Our burgers came and I took one bite and told my partner that I can not eat the burger. He asked why and I said the meat is rotten. I took another small bite to make sure and had to spit it out. I asked him to try his. Before he even took a bite he noticed it smelled bad. He took a small bite and agreed it was bad. I notified the waitress and she immediately too the food away and I told her not to bring me another one, she offered the menu again. The waitress said she told the cook about the hamburgers and he showed her it was fresh meat. I told her I don't care that let him eat it and see how he feels later. THE MEAT WAS ROTTEN! Reluctantly we ordered something else because we were hungry. I settled on breakfast and my partner settled on a Gyros. The food came and the waitress again says I saw the meat and it looked fresh. Again I said," I don't care that let him eat it and see how he feels later." We ate the new order we had placed and it didn't even taste good, it taste like old grease. The waitress came back again with the check and repeated again about she saw the meat but this time stated she took a piece of my partners burger and she agreed it was bad and she told the cook. She advised us to tell them at the front desk. We went to pay and I asked for the manager. One of the cashiers said."Mom." The manager came over and I explained the situation. Our bill didn't say burgers so she was confused. The waitress walked up and I told the waitress that she didn't even tell the manager and she said she had spoken to the cashier about it. I told the manager that I feel she should comp our meal. She said ,"I am sorry I can give you a discount but I can not comp it because you ate." I said."Yeah we ate because the waitress told us to order something else." The manager, very rudely, says OK and slings the debit card back at us and we leave. The manager was very unprofessional. She never once apologized or spoke to us in a decent way. Southern Bell, you lost a customer and I will be notifying all proper authorities about the rotten meat you served.

Great diner feel but a little disappointed with the food. Come for the country biscuits and gravy, one of the few places that know how to do it right. As far as the pancakes, too bland and not hot but warm. Plates were cold, not a good thing when you order several items off the menu. Southern Belle skillet was disappointing with hash browns as the base instead of skillet potatoes and was kinda dry. DO NOT ORDER THE CINABELLE!!! Tastes frozen, dry and just blah. Cinnabon tastes better in flavor and texture unfortunately. Coffee isn't bad for diner coffee.

Went to Southern Belles for the first time as it is so close to home. My partner and I ordered skillets and they were very good. His pancakes were nothing to write home about. The food came fast BUT unfortunately the service was horrible. I wish I could've caught her name. We were seated and she asked for our drink order and I told her we were ready to order as we had checked out the menu as we waited for a table. She then simply walked away. There was hardly any service on her behalf. The bus boys were more attentive than our server. We were never given water and when we asked for refills well ummm we never got em. We noticed how very attentive she was to others who seemed to be regulars and a customer leaving told her she'd hope her day got better. We all know that you must leave your problems at the door. All in all great food but TERRIBLE service

Good food and plenty of it. Friendly wait staff. Homemade soup is tasty and served hot. Turkey sandwich made with carved turkey. Prices are very reasonable. I always eat here when I'm in the area on business.

Num num num num! I usually get the wraps because they are huge (i bring someone with to split)each 1/2 are a size of a burrito ....I lovvvvve em. Just recently had a gyro omelette added FETA. Not stingy one but. Most waitresses are very nice & attentive , hostesses could hostess and be a little Warmer. I do prefer here overall.

  • Carm B.

The waitresses are so nice here!! I like to come here for breakfast. They do everything from egg white omelets to deep fried french toast (it is ridiculous, lol)... They can also accommodate large parties in their banquet room. They are only open for Breakfast & Lunch...

  • Adrian G.

A great service staff will HUGE plates of food. We were motivated by a Groupon and since it's not too far from home, we decided to give it a shot. There's not a better breakfast place in the area! Omelettes, skillets, pancakes and SERVICE are the best here. The ladies at our table have always been above and beyond friendly and conversational as well as attentive. This place is OUR place for breakfast!

    (4)
  • David G.

This is a great place for breakfast!! I was really impressed with the twists on traditional breakfast foods... red velvet pancakes, pumpkin pancakes, etc... The service was fast and polite (which is what I look for in a breakfast place... lots of coffee refills too). Everything was reasonably priced. I will definitely eat here again!! should open one in the city!!

Southern Belle's is a nice small little country restaurant. I love the ole time country decorations. Our waitress was simply great and very accommodating. The pancakes were absolutely delicious - light, golden brown, fluffy, buttery and they melt in your mouth! Our food came very fast and while we enjoyed our omelettes, they were a bit overcooked but still tasty. I would recommend this restaurant and will visit again very soon!

Finding good breakfast is one of the easiest things to do in Chicago. Try and get breakfast in the South, you are taking an unnecessary risk. Southern Belles is a classic spot, huge portions, fast service, and career servers. The latter being one of my requirements for a repeat visit. I want coffee on its way when I sit, I would like to assume the cheapest thing on the menu is the 2 eggs with. That is what I get 95% of the time for breakfast. Southern Belles takes this a bit further. They have a great pork chop breakfast, two huge bone in chops, or try the Chicken fried steak, nice peppery breading hanging off the sides of the plate. A good friend of mine has been eating here off and on for twenty years, one or possibly more of the servers have also been here this long. They aren't going to sweet talk you, they will just flash by to refill your coffee and buzz around the room with the efficiency of a ninja. Just the way i like my breakfast. I removed one star for price, they are a touch high, but their portions are silly big.

The hubs and I have been going to Southern Belles for years, along w/ half our neighborhood (Clear-Ridge) and there is no place better. Massive portions (we are always bringing home leftovers) , speedy service and friendly faces keep us coming back!

  • rick a.

Southern belles is another also-ran in the breakfast restaurant race. While there is nothing wrong with food or service here there is also nothing outstanding to say that it is worth more than a 5 mile trek. On the plus side the price is right for the healthy portions you get. I guess I am just critical of places that don't seem to strive to say 'Hey look at me'.
